When eating food in México, you usually think of spicy salsa, tacos y quesadillas. Some (er, many) Mexicanos eat these foods every day. Seriously.
But we are from Agoura, and every now and then need some kind of food to remind us of home. So, two very important words come to mind:
Diane just whips up turkey burgers, iced tea, fries and bread |
Pecan Pie, Pumpkin Trifle for Thanksgiving.. |
Without these 2, we would be eating tacos every night. Costco offers pizza, hot dogs, and everything else American. Especially in the food court, or in Mexico: Soda de Fuentes. And we buy our salmon, pasta, and meat at Costco. Is it less expensive? Depends...Some is, some not. The meat is about the same as the U.S., and the same old “comfort foods” we buy in Westlake are sold in Queretaro. Diane is a beautiful cocinera (chef) and has no problem whipping up a hamburger dinner with salad, salmon with rice, or pasta with sausage.
Or course, the desserts include brownies, oatmeal cookies, and anything else she comes across.

Gavin and I are blessed for her. Otherwise, we would be eating...you guessed it...tacos y sopes.

A typical food court in Mexico. Very American. |
A real Deli in Mexico! |
Curiosity foods…
Are there repulsive foods in Mexico? Yes, if you consider grasshoppers and crickets a delicacy, then you belong here. Yikes. Grasshoppers (or Crickets) A delicacy. |
A couple months ago, Gavin and I were walking by a bar when we saw the New York Giants playing football (American). We stopped in for the 4th quarter. When we started to order food, we decided we were tired of the same old thing, so we decided on something inexpensive and from a pig: "pata." We started to eat it, but it tasted very strange. The waiter told us it was from the pig and was delicious. He motioned toward his foot--we then realized we were eating pig's feet! We politely returned it and ordered tacos.
Such is the way of life of food in Queretaro.

Nice. Running out of food to talk about? What's next? -Alan
ReplyDeleteNo more food. Probably butterflies will be next....
ReplyDeleteHmmmmmmmmmm................... travel all the way to Mexico to eat Costco ? Am I missing something here ? With all the different international food choices: Greek, Indian, German, Italian, Ribs, Brazilian Steakhouses, French, Irish and British pubs; it seems you have plenty to be content with. Can you buy peanut butter and jelly ?
ReplyDeleteWe go to Costco about every 2 weeks.yes, you can get peanut butter and jelly. When I started eating a bagel st school, my Mexican colleagues gave me the strangest looks. Like I was eating a human or something. Yes, we eat a huge variety of foods.

$35 for a slice of Costco pizza! And I thought it was expensive here. 😉
ReplyDeleteYup. Pretty pricey. US: $1.75....When you drive by and see a beautiful apartment in a nice area for 4 million (pesos), you really have to do the math. That's about 200,000$, which is very expensive for here.
